Tucked away in a closet-sized work space in Brunswick, a very clever tinkerer is soldering, assembling, testing, loading and shipping out cute little pink boxes to all corners of the world. Continue reading Poly Effects – Digit

As Paradise Falls, a Brisbane based metal outfit have just wrapped up a tour, dropped a crazy series of video’s supporting the release of the latest single ‘Star Blind’ and are prepping for the drop of a highly anticipated full length later this year. I got the chance to get nerdy with one of the members of the band during the run of shows and things get technical. It’s so great! World…meet Danny..he’s a gear nerd.
I don’t think words are needed for this feature. Just look at this!!!!! Tom @ Big Cheese blurs the line between art and work with the most incredible looking pedals and customized builds. This is just too damn cool. Read on for the story behind it all! Continue reading DIYFS: Big Cheese Pedals
Digging through gumtree looking at gear…I came across a really cool looking pedal and noticed it was handmade in Melbourne and put it on my ‘watch list’ which should actually be called the ‘cant afford but still want it list’. I later discovered through a recommendation that the pedal belonged to a builder who was based locally (to me) and is making amps, pedals and mods from home.. so naturally I had to get in touch!!
So world.. meet MEDOR! Continue reading DIYFS – MEDOR Amps
A few names immediately came to mind when we began thinking about content and contributors for the ‘Gear Nerds’ features. Jesse was one of them. Fronting the Melbourne based alt/rock outfit ‘Crying Sirens’ Jesse is a gear modder, buyer/seller, music fan and aficionado. The group released their full length ‘Atsu’ at the end of 2015 and have been steadily gigging since. I recently asked him about his tools-of-the-trade and what he’s using to get the utterly massive sounds you’ll hear on the album and on stage. Continue reading Gear Nerds – Jesse Delaney (Crying Sirens)
The scope of a pedal builder as we’ve seen in our past interviews truly does vary from person to person. More often than not though, the common thread you will find with makers is that the pedals being made or modded are making sounds that are inspired and clearly attached to the persons love for a particular scene or genre. For Adam from (the awesomely named) El Shonko FX. He has translated a love of things nasty and noisy to the benefit of every absurdist, explorer and noisemaker out there. Continue reading GEAR NERDS – El Shonko FX
Building anything from the ground up takes time. It takes a special kind of effort and persistence to bring idea’s to life. Someone devoted to their craft will happily part with their money, spend hours researching and practicing the art to finally come to a place where what they have is truly something special. Meet Ben, he’s the captain and creator behind Codtone – custom guitar pedals. He’s one of those people.
If you play guitar in a band (or on your own) chances are you own a few effects pedals. Getting your first Boss pedal has become a rite of passage for young players (mine was a Boss CE-2!). However, the market for people wanting to get creative and boost/change/manipulate their sound is a bit like Alice’s rabbit hole…once you fall in things can get overwhelming and down right weird. If you find yourself wanting more, something really unique or in some cases…something that doesn’t exist yet…well then you’ve got a problem. You have to get more than creative. That’s when you need someone like Kris. Continue reading Chapter4Effects w/ Kris
